The 13th annual Math Week took place at the Northland Pines Middle & High School, SOAR High School, and SOAR Middle School from February 16th to February 22nd. Math Week is put on by the Northland Pines Mathematics Department. This year’s theme was, “Solving Life’s Challenges One Problem at a Time''. With a goal of generating awareness of and excitement for mathematics outside of the classroom, Math Week celebrates mathematics and allows students to have some fun with different mathematical topics. Through fun competitions, Math Week gives students a chance to show off their math skills, problem solving skills, computer programming skills, and creativity. Students who successfully complete events earn tickets/points towards prizes. Prizes for Math Week are donated and funded by our sponsors. This year’s prizes throughout the district included an Apple Watch, 1 set of AirPods Pro, 2 sets of regular AirPods, a $300 Track Side Jacket Voucher, 6 TI-84 CE Calculators, several Amazon Gift Cards and Trig’s Gift Cards, Math Week Water Bottles, and Math Week T-Shirts, designed by NPHS student Evan Janet.
This year’s High School students competed in several contests to earn tickets for the prize raffle at the end of the week. Logan Marquardt came away as the top ticket earner with 84 tickets, earning a $100 gift card. With their tickets earned for the prize raffle, Samantha Krueger won the $300 Track Side Voucher, Marissa Brassell the Apple Watch, and Emma Weber the Air Pod Pros. Additionally, many classes throughout the school participated in the Daily Classroom Competition problem in an attempt to be the first to answer a problem correctly and win doughnuts for the class. In its seventh year, there is a $1000 scholarship tied to the NPHS Mathematician of the Year Contest. The scholarship is sponsored by SonicNet and is awarded to the senior who accumulates the most points in the Mathematician of the Year contest throughout their tenure at NPHS. This year’s winner of the scholarship was Jacob Klopp.
