Eagle Eye News started as a simple independent study course. The group was rather small, consisting of three girls at first, and then grew into an eight member team. The class centered around sports, specifically writing about sports and then doing video recaps of games. Now the group has started doing Twitter updates of the sports games in progress. Eagle Eye News was given the privilege to interview Governor Scott Walker recently. The experience provided new aspects of what it is like to work with a politically experienced individual. Other highlights from this year include a quality homecoming pep rally video, a promotional video for the Great Headwaters Trails and State Cross Country video coverage. A variety of community groups have afforded our journalism team with many great learning opportunities and practical experiences that go beyond journalism. We would not grow as a group without their support of Northland Pines High School.
In the past, one of the lead members of the news crew, Jocelyn Monge, was granted an internship with Wisconsin Prep Hockey during the WIAA State Hockey Tournament for the second year in a row, and we extend our gratitude to Mr. Bill Berg and the Prep Hockey staff. Throughout the tournament Jocelyn served as a primary writer for the game articles and impressed many with the process she followed to produce interesting and accurate articles. During games, Jocelyn takes diligent notes on game flow, player performance and statistics. She would utilize the break between periods to begin the articles and then add to them at each successive break in the action. Within minutes of the game being concluded Jocie would have the article completed and ready to post on the Wisconsin Prep Hockey website. It was fantastic to follow her during the tournament and see her working as a true sports journalist while putting her writing quality and style on display. She has been immensely successful, and will take her newfound knowledge with her as she furthers her education in college.
Due to our program’s growth, Journalism is now an official course in 2016-17, and not just an independent study course offered to high school students. The school board approved Journalism as an English credit with the option to also receive elective credit for students who want to take the class more than one time. Our group greatly appreciates the support of administration and the board as we continue to grow. We now have our own website!
