7th Grade Family & Consumer Science
This class is an introduction to the many areas of life skills students will be faced with as they mature and become more independent individuals. This class will help meet the needs of students spending time after school alone until parents get home from work. Families today are busy and more responsibilities are placed on the children within the family. Meeting the needs of these children can begin by teaching them skills they will use in their daily and future life. Area’s of focus are Foods and Nutrition=learn safety and sanitation practices when working in the kitchen, learn basic food preparation skills, reading and following a recipe,and become familiar with the MyPlate food guide for healthy meal planning. They will apply these skills to prepare basic food items representing different areas of the MyPlate. The next area of focus is babysitting and the responsibilities that go with caring for younger children when parents are not home. They begin to look at earning money and the responsibilities of having and committing to a job.
8th Grade Family & Consumer Science
This is a comprehensive semester class to build on the life skills talked about in 7th grade. It is a class that can give students the opportunity to gain new skills, enhance skills, and apply these skills through group activities, class projects, and independent work. It is a class that incorporates academic areas such as Language, and Life Math to show relevance in daily life. It will allow students to continue to explore the many life skills they will eventually deal with as they continue their path to becoming independent citizens. Units of study are: Relationships = self esteem, communication, bullying with a focus on the bystander, friends and family; Sewing = following directions, meeting deadlines, hand sewing and basic use of a machine to complete a high quality pillow project; Foods and Nutrition = MyPlate and healthy portions size in relation to weight management, key nutrients, and continued food preparation skills in preparing balanced simple low cost meals.
