Syllabus for Spanish 1
Students in Spanish I will begin the course with a discussion regarding why it is important to learn another language, and why they have chosen Spanish. An introduction to the Spanish language will begin with commonly seen Spanish words in our own English language to create a connection between the student’s language and the target language. Spanish I will begin to develop the student’s reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in the Spanish language. The focus of Spanish I will encompass: Proper pronunciation of the alphabet, numbers, the calendar, greeting one another, courtesies, classroom phrases, expressing likes and dislikes, school subjects, telling time, weekend activities, weather, and brief conversations.
Spanish I students will begin to learn about the culture and history of Spain and Mexico through songs, projects celebrating special festivals, and sampling authentic foods.
Spanish I will provide substantial vocabulary to create a basis for conversation. Grammatical concepts to be introduced will include: Spanish subject pronouns, usage of formal vs. informal you, nouns with definite and indefinite articles, the verb ser-to be, adjective agreement, present tense –ar ending verbs, the verb estar-to be, the verb ir-to go, and present tense of regular –er and –ir ending verbs.
