Similar to last year, all schools in the Northland Pines School District will be PBIS schools this upcoming 2014-2015 school year. PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support), is an ongoing process that helps students to develop self-discipline based on common sense, responsibility, and respect for oneself and others. PBIS is a district and state initiative that teaches and promotes appropriate/expected behaviors for all students. PBIS schools across Wisconsin have created a more positive environment for students and staff by establishing clear expectations for their students and taking active steps in teaching, modeling, and reinforcing appropriate behaviors school-wide.
Learning and practicing appropriate social behaviors are important steps in a student’s educational experience. These expectations will be introduced and practiced beginning with the first day of school and continue throughout the year. Students will be acknowledged and rewarded for exhibiting the expected behaviors. In order to achieve our district objectives and goals, it is necessary for students and staff to conduct themselves in a safe, orderly manner to create an effective learning environment.
“Pines Pride” is our district mantra. Each school has their own matrix, specific to the needs of their building; however, all schools refer to similar locations. We are proud of our school, and we will demonstrate that pride in everything we do wth respect, responsibility, and safety. With PBIS in its place, it should help to promote a positive school culture and a way to increase and reinforce positive behaviors.
Eagle River Elementary School supports the state Positive Behavioral Intervention, and Supports (PBIS) initiative, and provides many learning opportunities that help students develop an understanding for expected behavior both in and outside of the school environment. Staff at ERES work hard to model expectations for students and provide a variety of activities that reward and support positive behavior witnessed at our school.
At Eagle River Elementary School, students demonstrating positive behavior receive eagle tickets that can later be used to purchase items from our “school store cart.” We also try to involve every student and make them feel like a part of the PBIS process by having our word of the month incentive. Each month, staff picks one positive focus word such as respectful, kind, helpful, ect. Near the end of the month, students in each class get to pick a student they feel best represents the word, and that student is recognized at the end of the month during our Pines Pride assembly. At Pines Pride, students are recognized for a variety of other achievements. Classrooms are also involved in our PBIS efforts in order to promote an overall teamwork philosophy. If whole classes demonstrate positive behavior, as a group they receive an eagle feather for their class. Teachers set grade level goals for eagle feathers that helps make this process rewarding by reminding students that working together as a team helps achieve success.
