High School and Middle School staff members are now able to order quality coffee and baked goods on Wednesday for delivery on Friday morning thanks to TLC Coffee. TLC Coffee is a student-designed and operated coffee delivery service that enables students to learn functional, transitional and vocational skills via a school-based business.
As therapists, Annette Numrich and Emily Rhode have often been limited to videos, worksheets, board games and role playing to teach functional skills. This school-based business allows for integrated services while students interact with real customers, real co-workers, and real on-the-job scenarios.
Vocational Skills Learned
Communication (verbal and nonverbal)
Following a recipe and other procedures
Following directions (written and verbal)
Use of technology (iPad, email, spreadsheets, word processing)
Dressing for work
In addition to providing natural opportunities to learn and practice functional skills, students receive the following benefits:
Increased sense of purpose
Increased self esteem
Opportunities for social interaction
Generalization of learned skills
Becoming an integral part of the school
Establish new relationships with staff/students
A special thank you goes out to Intelligentsia Coffee of Chicago, IL for their donation of our very own Northland Pines Blend of coffee.
