Costa Rica: A Trip of a Lifetime!
Leaving from and returning to Wisconsin both provided their weather challenges but while in Costa Rica six Junior and Senior Spanish Club students along with Sra. and Sr. Weber embarked on the trip of their lifetime. Beginning our journey into the rainforest we spent two days and nights investigating the jungle floor; including a boat trip down the Sarapiquí river observing howler monkeys, a sloth and her baby, and many iguanas, while during our night excursion we witnessed bullet ants, click beetles, and cicadas hatching. The students participated in making organic chocolate, visited a pineapple plantation and also learned about the cultivation of the coffee bean. While at their homestay they spoke Spanish, learned four Costa Rican dances, how to prepare homemade tortillas and a filling called picadillo. We visited Asociación Obras del Espíritu Santo in San José where we helped prepare a lunch for children, women and elderly who are homeless or cannot afford a meal. It was quite an eye-opening experience for all of us. The last day the students enjoyed snorkeling, sun, and sand, on Isla Tortuga. Below are their quotes of their adventure:
"The Costa Rica trip opened my eyes to many new things. We saw so many animals and some I didn’t even know existed. When I was asked if I wanted to do the zip line of course I said YES but when I got done with the zip lining I realized that I just did something that not many people get to do. I am glad that the school gave me the opportunity to go on this amazing trip and talk in Spanish a lot more than I do here. I was also able to stay with this amazing family. They were so grateful to have us and they were glad that I wanted to do this in the first place. This trip changed my life and I think every student taking Spanish should go on this trip. It is so worth it.” - Samantha Caramanidis
“The trip was such a good learning experience and I'll never forget it. Living with a host family for a few days really made me feel like I was getting the full Costa Rican experience.” - Vanessa Niemczyk
“This trip was an amazing opportunity and a great learning experience. I had a lot fun of fun learning about the Costa Rican culture. Costa Rica is extremely beautiful and the wildlife was absolutely amazing.” - Liz Bohnen
“Visiting Costa Rica was truly a once in a lifetime experience! My experiences on the trip included howling with Howler monkeys, seeing how slow sloths really are, tanning on the hot sands of La Isla Tortuga, eating breakfast in the rain forest, zip-lining over a river, taste-testing coffee, eating Costa Rican cuisine, relaxing at the Baldi Hot Springs, speaking lots of Spanish, and much, much more! As they say in Costa Rica, this is living! ¡Pura vida!” - Becca Anderson
"Costa Rica is a beautiful place full of life, adventure, and spirit. Traveling to Costa Rica allowed me the unique opportunity to experience the country in an inclusive way, showing off many different wonderful aspects that a normal tourist may not have." - Jessica Anderson
