Algebra Connections is the first course in a five-year sequence of college preparatory mathematics courses that delivers traditionally rigorous algebraic content using a problem-based approach. It has strong threads woven throughout the course on multiple representations and the meaning of a solution. A major focus of the course is to develop multiple strategies to solve problems and to recognize multiple ways of understanding concepts.
Does CPM really work? CPM is a research based curriculum. This means that the material they put in their textbooks is based on scientific studies done on how students learn. CPM maintains their research by doing yearly studies to see how their curriculum stands up to more traditional curriculums. You can view the results of their research at the CPM Website.
How does CPM cover our state standards? CPM has matched up the Algebra Connections curriculum with the Wisconsin State Standards. They also have their curriculum for all course matched with the NCTM 9-12 Standards. The Common Core Standards for Mathematics were released in June of 2010. CPM has matched those Common Core Standards with the Algebra Connections curriculum.
