Welcome to Seventh Grade Life Science!
Seventh grade Life Science covers a wide variety of biological topics.
The year begins with a north woods tree identification project. Classification of organisms and use of field guides and dichotomous keys is emphasized. The students are introduced to Phenology (the study of organisms’ response to seasonal and climatic changes in the environment). This is continued throughout the year.
In our cell unit, students learn about the different types of cells. This includes extensive use of the microscope. Cell structure, processes, mitosis and meiosis, are also studied.
The genetics unit allows students to gain an understanding of the structure of DNA and how the principles of heredity operate. Punnett squares and pedigree charts are used to determine traits of offspring.
Other topics covered relate to animal diversity. Using a microscope and dissection, we take a comparative look at organisms, from the simple protists to the complex mammals.
In order to address the wide range of learning styles, lessons are presented in a fun and exciting way, using a variety of teaching methods. (i.e. hands-on lab activities, audio-visual materials, Smart Board, written assignments and group reviews).
The classroom also hosts a wide variety of living critters. Check out the critter photo gallery to meet them all. The high point of the year is when students have opportunity to handle the critters they've been caring for and observing all year!
